Short History on Thanksgiving
Do you have any idea what date was the First Thanksgiving? Well, based on history the First Thanksgiving was held on September 8, 1565. This is when 600 Spanish settlers gave a Mass of Thanksgiving for their safe arrival to the new world. After the mass, it was followed by a feast. Another side of history also said that the First Thanksgiving was held April 30, 1598. They too were Spaniards and conducted a mass followed by a celebration of their safe arrival.
Most of the recorded First Thanksgiving was because of safe arrival. In the year 1619, the English settlers of the Virginia Colony celebrated it also because of their safe arrival at Berkeley Hundred. Then it was required of them to observe it yearly as a “day of thanksgiving.” Up to this day, it’s the same site where the annual Thanksgiving event is celebrated.
In 1621, the Pilgrims of Plymouth celebrated Thanksgiving because of the bountiful harvest.
Though Thanksgiving is a non-sectarian celebration, most American families attribute it to the goodness of God. It’s a day where families gather together to thank God for all the blessings they have received.
Commonly, an American Thanksgiving table is filled with sumptuous foods and a beautiful thanksgiving flower at the center and candles. The main dish is a stuffed turkey with delicious gravy. To date, Thanksgiving is celebrated every forth Thursday of November at the end of the harvest season. It is an annual American Federal holiday to utter thankfulness for one's material and spiritual possessions.
This event also commemorates the start of the holiday season. Most people are already in vacation euphoria after the Thanksgiving dinner.
